Station History

From Local Roots to National Network

The journey of these stations began with local origins before becoming part of a larger network. 88.9 FM first signed on April 30, 1991, as KMBH-FM, initially airing NPR programming.[4] Shortly after, on July 1992, 88.1 FM began broadcasting as KHID.[4]

Both stations were originally owned by Rio Grande Valley Educational Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brownsville. They initially simulcast NPR news and talk, alongside classical music and jazz programming.[4]

A significant change occurred on April 7, 2015, when KMBH-FM's call letters were changed to KJJF, honoring Bishop John Joseph Fitzpatrick, the founder of RGV Educational Broadcasting. This also helped differentiate it from its former television sister station.[5]

In early 2019, Immaculate Heart Media, Inc. announced its acquisition of both stations for $1.25 million. The purchase was finalized on May 30, 2019, integrating KJJF and KHID into the Relevant Radio network, which broadcasts Catholic programming in English.[6]
