The Role of the President

Primus Inter Pares

The President of the Swiss Confederation presides over the meetings of the Federal Council, the seven-member executive body of Switzerland. This role is distinct from heads of state in many other countries; the Swiss President is considered primus inter pares (first among equals).

Annual Term

The presidency rotates annually among the members of the Federal Council. Traditionally, the position is held by the Vice President of the previous year, ensuring a predictable succession and continuity in leadership.

Representational Duties

While chairing Federal Council meetings, the President also undertakes special representational duties. However, they do not possess powers exceeding those of their fellow councillors and continue to manage their own federal department.

Historical Leadership

The office of President of the Swiss Confederation was established with the Federal Constitution of 1848. The following table details the individuals who have held this significant position, reflecting the evolution of Swiss governance and political landscape.
