Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation: Powering Progress

🌱 Foundation and Early Development

Following the formation of Maharashtra state on May 1, 1960, the state government established the "Board of Industrial Development" (BID) on October 1, 1960, under the chairmanship of Shri S. G. Barve. The BID's recommendations were subsequently implemented by the industries department. A significant early initiative involved entrusting the development of the Ulhas Valley Water Supply to the BID. Based on the Borkar Committee's recommendations, the BID drafted legislation that was enacted as the "Maharashtra Industrial Development Act," officially giving birth to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) as a distinct entity on August 1, 1962. The inaugural ceremony took place at Wagle Estate, Thane, presided over by the then Chief Minister, Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan.

💧 Strategic Infrastructure Policy

Key policy decisions made by MIDC profoundly altered the state's socioeconomic fabric, extending its activities into interior regions. A particularly astute strategic decision was the establishment of an "independent filtered, potable water supply system of adequate capacity" as a fundamental requirement for industrial development. This initiative not only stabilized the population base near industrial zones but also spurred significant urban growth in adjacent towns and villages through the strategic provision of water from MIDC's own supply systems. The remarkable growth observed in the Kalyan complex and Pimpri-Chinchwad are direct outcomes of this foundational policy.

📈 Expansion and Specialization

Over its operational history, MIDC has developed 233 industrial areas across Maharashtra, spanning approximately 53,120 hectares. Recognizing the evolving needs of industries, MIDC has strategically developed specialized parks and industrial clusters equipped with tailored infrastructure. These include dedicated zones for Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT), Wine Parks, Textile Parks, Chemical Zones, Food Parks, Leather Parks, Floriculture Parks, and Electronics Zones. Furthermore, to attract multinational corporations and meet international standards, MIDC has established five-star industrial areas at nine locations. To bolster export capabilities, MIDC has also developed Special Economic Zones (SEZs), offering a streamlined environment for exporters, securing 74 SEZ approvals from the Government of India, placing Maharashtra at the forefront among Indian states.

🏗️ Extensive Industrial Network

MIDC has established a vast network of industrial infrastructure, developing 225 industrial complexes that collectively encompass approximately 1,300,000 acres (5,300 km²) of land across the state. This expansive development provides the physical foundation for industrial activity.

💡 Specialized Industrial Parks

To cater to the specific needs of diverse sectors, MIDC has pioneered the development of specialized industrial parks. These include dedicated zones for Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT), Wine Parks, Gems and Jewellery clusters, Textile hubs, Leather processing centers, Chemical industry zones, Electronics manufacturing facilities, Food processing units, Foundries, Steel plants, Automobile manufacturing hubs, and Floriculture parks, among others.

💧 Robust Water Supply Infrastructure

An elaborate network for industrial and domestic water supply has been established by MIDC, ensuring consistent availability of this critical resource. The total quantity of water supplied through this network amounts to 1285 Million Liters per Day (MLD), supporting the operational needs of industries and surrounding communities.

⭐ Global Competitiveness

The systematic and planned industrial development fostered by MIDC has consistently positioned Maharashtra as a leader in India for productivity, economic performance, business efficiency, government effectiveness, infrastructure development, and overall competitiveness. Notably, the World Competitiveness Report 2006 ranked Maharashtra 37th globally, surpassing several established economies.
