Historical Trajectory

Genesis and Evolution

The National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna), formerly known as Bihar School of Engineering and later Bihar College of Engineering, traces its origins back to 1886. Initially established as a survey training school, it was upgraded to Bihar College of Engineering in 1900, introducing graduate-level curricula in 1924. The institution was renamed Bihar College of Engineering in 1932.

Transition to NIT Status

In a significant development, the Government of India elevated the Bihar College of Engineering to National Institute of Technology (NIT) status on January 28, 2004. This transition occurred following the reorganization of states, which led to Bihar losing its sole Regional Engineering College (REC) in Jamshedpur to the newly formed state of Jharkhand. By 2002, the Indian government had resolved to upgrade all RECs to NITs, ensuring at least one NIT per state. NIT Patna was the first institution to receive this direct upgrade.

The institute was granted Institute of National Importance status in 2007, in accordance with the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, solidifying its position as a premier national institution.

Campus and Infrastructure

Current Location

NIT Patna currently operates from a 36-acre campus situated along Ashok Rajpath. This urban campus is strategically located on the southern bank of the Ganges River, opposite the confluence with the Gandak River. Its proximity to Gandhi Ghat offers students scenic views of the Ganges.

Future Expansion

A significant expansion is underway with the allocation of a 125-acre plot in Sikandarpur village, Bihta, approximately 40 km from Patna. This new campus is designed to accommodate a substantial increase in student capacity, planned in three phases to support 2,415 students in Phase I, an additional 2,000 in Phase II, and a further 2,000 in Phase III.

  • Phase I: Construction of buildings, site development, and essential infrastructure for 2,415 students.
  • Phase II: Expansion to include facilities for an additional 2,000 students.
  • Phase III: Further development to accommodate another 2,000 students.

Studies are slated to commence in the Bihta campus from July, marking a new chapter for the institute.
